How Reiki Works

Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. A form of this type of healing is also present in other cultures worldwide.

The practice involves the transfer of “universal life energy” (also known as Qi or Chi) from the practitioner to the recipient. This energy is believed to flow through the practitioner’s hands and into the body of the person receiving the treatment, promoting healing and balance.

The Key Principles of Reiki:

  1. Universal Life Energy: Reiki is based on the belief that there is an invisible energy force that flows through all living things. When this energy is in balance, the body can maintain good health. When it’s out of balance, it may lead to physical, emotional, or spiritual issues.
  2. Hands-On Healing: During a Reiki session, the practitioner lightly places their hands on or just above the recipient’s body in specific positions. The idea is that the practitioner acts as a conduit to channel healing energy to the recipient, helping to clear blockages and allow the body’s natural energy to flow freely.
  3. Non-Invasive: Reiki doesn’t require any physical manipulation or force, which makes it a very gentle healing method. It’s also performed with the person fully clothed, and there is no need for any medications or invasive procedures.
  4. Energy Flow: The practitioner is trained to sense where energy blockages or imbalances may exist in the recipient’s body. By gently guiding the flow of energy, Reiki aims to restore balance and harmony, promoting healing on all levels — physical, emotional, and spiritual.

Chakra and Energy Field Alignment: In Reiki, there is a focus on the body’s chakra system (the energy centres in the body) and the aura (the energy field surrounding the body). The practitioner works to clear blockages and ensure these energy centres are open and balanced.

How the Energy Works

  • Hands-on or Hands-Off: The practitioner can either touch the body lightly or hover their hands just above the person’s body.
  • Channelling the Energy: The practitioner doesn’t “give” their own energy to the client but instead channels the universal life energy to the client. This energy is believed to flow through the practitioner into the recipient, aiding the body in its natural healing process.

Sense of Peace and Relaxation: Reiki often produces a deep sense of calm and relaxation. Many people report feeling a pleasant warmth or tingling during a session as the energy flows through them.

Benefits of Reiki

Pain Relief: Reiki may help reduce chronic pain, tension, and muscle soreness by promoting relaxation and encouraging energy flow.

Boosting the Immune System: By promoting balance in the energy system, Reiki can help strengthen the body’s immune system and improve overall health.

Improved Sleep: Many people report experiencing better sleep after a Reiki session due to its deeply relaxing effects on the body and mind.
Accelerated Recovery: Reiki may help the body recover faster from illness, surgery, or injury by supporting natural healing processes.

Stress Reduction: One of the most immediate effects of Reiki is a significant reduction in stress and anxiety. It promotes relaxation and helps to calm the nervous system.

Emotional Release: Reiki can help people release pent-up emotions, past traumas, or unresolved feelings. The clearing of emotional blockages often results in a greater sense of emotional freedom and well-being.

Coping with Grief and Loss: Reiki can support emotional healing during times of grief, loss, or sadness, helping individuals process these emotions in a healthy way.

Mental Clarity and Focus: Reiki can help clear mental fog, improve concentration, and promote clarity of thought.

Spiritual Growth: Many people use Reiki as a tool for spiritual development, as it encourages a deeper connection with oneself, others, and the universe. It’s often used for those seeking greater awareness, inner peace, and alignment with their life’s purpose.

Relaxation and Calmness: A regular Reiki practice can help bring about a profound sense of peace, calmness, and balance, leading to an overall improved mental outlook.

Mind-Body Connection: Reiki is a holistic therapy, meaning it addresses the whole person — body, mind, and spirit. It encourages harmony and balance between all aspects of a person’s life.

Complementary Therapy: Reiki is often used in conjunction with other medical treatments, therapies, or wellness practices. It doesn’t replace medical care but works alongside it to enhance overall well-being.

Self-Awareness: Reiki can enhance one’s sensitivity to their own energy and the energy of others. It helps cultivate awareness of the internal and external forces that affect your well-being.

Empowerment: As a person becomes more in tune with their energy, they may feel more empowered to take charge of their own healing and well-being.
